Sam Pilcher, an old friend from The Castle Climbing Centre in London, has died climbing in Borrowdale. His friend Steve Catterick, broke the news to me recently and it was a bombshell! There are many folk out there that knew Sam, and will agree in his character being awesome, and he will be deeply missed.
Sam was a larger than life character and I always remember his enthusiasm to want to help others. As such, he had recently contacted me about his and Steve's crazy idea of climbing 18 old 1890's routes in the Lake District, in old climbing boots - Old Routes in Old Boots - and wanted to raise funds for our cause - the Sanctuary Project. Steve and Sam were about to start the project when tragedy struck.
Steve has started the Old Routes in Old Boots and is still using our appeal as a fund raiser, true to Sam's request. Steve can be found on instagram @steve_the_climber and his exploits up these old classics is jaw dropping. And we thank you for all your help Steve
Here's to you Sam - may you shine on you crazy diamond.
